The Kadin Human Rights Observatory condemns in the strongest terms the heinous crime documented in a video published yesterday, showing a woman being tortured by being suspended from a tree. After verification, it has been confirmed that the incident occurred in the Darfur region, and the perpetrator has previously appeared in other pictures wearing a Rapid Support Forces uniform, confirming his responsibility for this crime and his affiliation with these forces.

This crime represents a blatant violation of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law. It is one of a series of systematic violations reflecting the horrific suffering of civilians and the continuation of torture crimes, sexual violence, and systematic abuses committed by the Rapid Support Forces against women in Darfur and other areas of Sudan.

The Kadin Human Rights Observatory demands the following from the international community:

  1. Open an independent and transparent international investigation into this crime and all similar violations

  2. Bring all those responsible for this crime and violations to justice without delay

  3. Activate international accountability mechanisms and competent courts to prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes

  4. Provide actual protection for civilians, especially women and children, from systematic violence crimes

The Observatory emphasizes that the international community’s silence in the face of such crimes encourages continued impunity and increases the suffering of victims. Therefore, the Kadin Human Rights Observatory demands:

  • The United Nations and the African Union

  • All international and regional human rights organizations

  • Countries with influence over the warring parties

To take urgent and effective action to stop these violations, hold the Rapid Support Forces and their leaders accountable for these crimes, and ensure there is no impunity.

This crime and others like it must serve as a wake-up call for the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities in protecting civilians in Sudan.
